Jena Six T-shirt Ban Leads Student to Sue Tenn. District

A student was forced to remove her Free the Jena Six T-shirt at her high school or leave campus has filed a lawsuit last Thursday against the Rutherford Country Board of Education and the assistant Principal. She was one of 20 students asked to remove the Free Jena 6 t-shirts. The student claims that her First Amendment rights have been violated. The Free the Jena Six t-shirts were made following an incident where six black students were charged with murder for beating a white student to death. The Assistant Principal informed the student when she arrived at school that the shirt might be a problem that that she was to remove it because it was important to maintain a safe environment at school and the t-shirt subject matter was controversial. The students attorney claims that the school can’t ban shirts based on fear that something might happen.

In the case of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District in 1969, the Supreme Court ruled that public schools can only censor speech if it will result in “material disruption or invade the rights of others”. The student is suing for money and the ability to wear the Free Jena 6 t-shirts at school.

Master Baiter Fishing T-Shirt Banned By Southwest Airlines

Southwest airlines refused to allow a passenger on board if they did not change their t-shirt. The passenger was wearing a t-shirt that stated “Master Baiter”. This is the second time in a few months that Southwest has stopped a passenger for boarding because of a t-shirt they were wearing. The passenger was wearing a fictional fishing shop t-shirt with the words that stated “Master Baiter” and trying to leave Columbus, Ohio. Winiecki was given the option (After ALREADY being in his seat) to change his t-shirt, turn it inside out, OR get off the plane. As he should have, Winiecki protested that the airliner was infringing on his right to free speech BUT in fear of missing his flight and a day of work he changed his shirt.

Southwest later made it public that the MADE A MISTAKE and that they Southwest DOES NOT HAVE A DRESS CODE. However it does have language in its carriage contract that states they reserves to deny service to any passenger with “lewd, obscene or patently offensive” clothing and the airlines HAVE provided employees of SPECIFIC examples of what is lewd or offensive.

Student kicked about of school cause of John Edwards T-Shirt

A high school student in Texas we kicked out of school for wearing a John Edwards for President 2008 t-shirt. The school district dress code states that students can’t wear political slogans on t-shirts. The student doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with wearing a political shirt to school. The only t-shirts are allowed on school campus must be related to school clubs, organizations, sports, spirit, college, or just a plain colored t-shirt. The parents believe the policy inhibits free speech but as we have mentioned in many of our other articles at banshirts.com that students don’t have full free speech when at school. Of course student officials claim that the dress code policy of t-shirts is to maintain a safe and orderly environment and gives the power of school officials to make judgment calls on each t-shirt.

You can view a power point of unacceptable t-shirts on the school web site. There is also a claim by the parents that they claim to sue the school on the John Edwards blog and read more info from our source.

Bush Lied, They Died with Dead Solider Names T-Shirts - Now for Sale AGAIN

In a federal court ruling Thursday in Flagstaff, an Arizona resident (Daniel Frazier) will now be allowed to continue manufacturing and selling T-shirts bearing the names of deceased soldiers. Frazier, who runs the site carryabigsticker.com was selling t-shirts with the names of dead soldiers in Irag with various anti-Bush slogans such as Bush Lied, They Died. The issue was whether or not Frazier had the right to use the names of the dead soldiers without getting the permission of their families. The battle is not over though, The Attorney General’s Office will still decide if they will appeal Thursday’s ruling.

I Love My Wiener T-Shirt - Banned at a High School

A student who is a junior Sesser-Valier High School was asked to remove his “I (heart) My Wiener” t-shirt or leave school. The t-shirt has an image of a dachshund dog and the text I heart. The student said that he wore the shirt to pay tribute to his daschund “Peewee” that died four months ago. The student claims that the teachers have their minds in the gutter about the t-shirt and there is nothing offensive about it. The student chose to go home and was given zeros in all his classes because it was an unexcused absence. The school dress code prohibits “students from wearing any clothing that is disrupting to the educational process, interferes with the maintenance of a positive teaching and learning climate or compromises reasonable standards of health, safety and decency”. The judgment call is made by the Principals. Because the student is a minor the Superintended of the school district was unable to discuss the disciplinary action against the student.

I Love My Weiner T-Shirt

The family is considering legal action against the school and according to Southern Illinois University Carbondale law professor they might have a case that they could win because the shirt does not promote drugs or violence. The issue is the constitutional rights of free speech are reduced for students and are NOT the same as for the general public.

Gay? Fine By Me T-shirt gets student sent home from school

Heathure Farnham was sent from from her school in Ihaca, NY for wearing a t-shirt that had the phrase “Gay? Fine by Me”.  Heathure was informed by the principal that the message of her t-shirt was inappropriate for school. She was given the option to find another shirt, alter the shirt she was wearing, or leave school. Heathure choose to leave school! Frusterated for not being able to wear any t-shirt she wants, Heathure called the media to get attention on the issue.

The principal made it clear that the school’s dress code prohibits “disruptive” clothing or hairstyles and that it is a judgement call on behalf of school administrators to determine what is considered disruptive clothing.  Those students who wore clothing that was deemed disruptive are to alter or change their clothing or subject to disciplinary action.  Heathure believes that the shirts message did not demean any group or individual.

Your liver is evil. It must be punished T-Shirt banned at airport

Edna Taylor was told that she could not check in a Continental Airlines in Miami until she changed her t-shirt. Edna Taylor had to change her shirt right at the Continental ticket counter. Edna was wearing a t-shirt that she received on a party boat in St. Thomas that stated “Your liver is evil. It must be punished”. The counter agent refused to let the woman check her bags or go to the bathroom and change. She was forced to change her shirt in the counter line in front of everyone and was allowed to fly on the plane. The airline denies the claim of the incident. Apparently, Continental has an attire policy for non-revenue flyers (airline employees) and Continental claims that the agent mistook them for non-revenue flyers.

Yankee’s Suck! T-Shirt Banned

Yankee Suck!!! This has been the chant at games played between the Yankees and the Red Sox for almost one hundred years. In recent years, tee shirts bearing these words have been banned at all events. They are not allowed at any games played between the two teams. Red Sox fans have harbored resentment toward the Yankees since Babe Ruth was traded. Vendors have replaced the famous slogan with a less offensive one.

Yankees Suck 2-Sided White T-Shirt

The new slogans such as “Evil Empure” are not specific to the Yankees, and therefore is an acceptable slogan. There are some members of the Yankees that have suffered at the hands of Red Sox fans; there are others on different teams that have suffered as much if not more.

Johnny Damon, who is considered by all Red Sox fans to be a traitor, has become the tee shirt vendor moneymaking dream.
There are some fans that believe that tee shirts depicting the entire team will last longer than targeting one player. Using the “Yankees Suck” phrase as a prime example. This phrase has lasted almost a hundred years. Can anyone remember a tee shirt about a player? Some feel that the chant is getting too old because it is not only shouted at baseball games, but at any game involving New England players.
