ACLU files lawsuit over banned Gay T-shirts

The ACLU filed a lawsuit on behalf of a 15-year-old student. The student, LaStaysha Meyers, wore her tee shirt supporting gay right to a Webb City Missouri High School, and was punished for it twice. The lawsuit filed in Federal Court states that the Webb City School allows its students to wear tee shirts that state their political beliefs. The students are also allowed to wear tee shirts expressing their opinions on abortion. Meyers, a heterosexual girl feels that by not allowing the students to wear gay rights tee shirts, it is infringing on their first amendment rights. The Webb City School has agreed not to censor Meyers in the future for wearing her gay support tee shirt. Students of contact the ACLU regarding matter of gay rights and dress codes. The ACLU states that if a student is planning on wearing such a tee shirt, they should know what to expect. As long as the tee shirt does not express anything vulgar, obscene, threatening or lewd, it should be accepted schools. In a recent decision, wearing a tee shirt expressing an opinion is considered freedom of speech, and that the student wearing the shirt cannot be suspended.
