Flags on T-Shirts and Clothing Now Allowed on Campus
In April 2006, A meeting was called by school officials to discuss the issue of displaying flags on clothing. Students felt it was infringing on their first amendment rights by not being allowed to wear what they choose.
Wearing the flag of any country on clothing was prohibited because officials felt it would incite unnecessary harassment and even violence between students and be a disruption in class routine.
Several students had been suspended for wearing the flag on their clothes. A protest rally was held, and in light of the situation, the meeting was held.
Skyline High School students will return to school from spring break to find that the dress code has been revised to allow the flag to be worn on clothing.
The Principal of the school issued a statement to parents that the flag might be worn on clothing as long as it is done in a respectful, appropriate manner. He further stated that civil flags of different ethnic background would be accepted. However, harassment taunting and provocation of any kind will not be tolerated.
