Grammar school child suspended for wrong color t-shirt
A Winston elementary school boy was suspended on the first day of school after wearing the wrong color tee shirt. At the end of the prior school year, notices were sent home and parents were advised of the new dress code that would be implement for the following school year. They were advised to buy solid color shirts only in any color. The mother of the child, thinking it would be safe, bought all white shirts without collars. The child was told to change into a “Loaner shirt” which the school supplied, and would be allowed to finish the school day. The suspension would take place the next day. The child’s mother was notified by the school and she went to pick up her child and to discuss the violation, and question the notice that went home the summer before.
The parent was told that her child would not be released until the end of the school day, even though he was suspended. School officials told her that when her child was in school, the mother had no parental authority. Statements like these have sparked outrage in parents that have led to the question of competency in the School Department.
