Hurtful Slogans on T-Shirts Banned in Schools

Recently, a student in a San Francisco School had his case heard in front of the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 3-judge panel heard the motions of Public Schools banning slogan on tee shirts that are hurtful to others. The student argued that he was expressing his opinion and that he should be allowed to wear what he chooses.

The school argued that the tee shirt was hurtful to the gay students at the school and that it could incite violence.
It was argued that it was an infringement of first amendment rights and that students should be allowed to wear anything they choose. The teen wore a tee shirt that read, “Homosexuality is Shameful”

He was asked by school officials to remove it. The Court ruled that the school had the right to ask the student to remove the tee shirt as is was hurtful to the gay community at the school. The ACLU is hearing more and more from students who have issues with their schools. Everyday they receive thousands of phone calls and letters that state the disdain they have with their school and how the schools are trying to censor their beliefs.
