Immigration T-Shirts Banned at School
Two eighteen-year-old high school seniors attending Temecula Valley High School are at the center of attention because of the tee shirts that they plan to wear. The two teenagers do not get into trouble, they get outstanding grades they simply want to make a statement.
This is in response to a Latino protest against tougher immigration laws. Originally, there were forty-one students that were going to wear the tee shirts. Under threat from the school that they would not be able to participate the any graduation, and arrest, they stepped away from wearing the tee shirts. The tee shirts that are on the center of this controversy read on the front ”walk out” and on the back it reads “of our country.” The Students now plan to wear the tee shirts to protect their freedom of speech amendment.
The two students claim that students wear tee shirt that have sayings like “Brown Pride, and If Jesus comes back, I’ll kill him” School official state that these phrases are not derogatory toward one specific group of people. The school police officer overheard the student saying that they were going to wear the shirts anyway, and advised the not too. He told them that he believed the message on the shirts would be offensive and create tension, possible violence in the school.
