Student Punished for Wearing Gay Marriage T-Shirt

16-year-old Zach Hust wore his tee shirt supporting gay marriage to school and was punished for it. Zach and his friends have worn their shirts throughout the school year. Only recently was it noticed. Zach and his parents contacted the ACLU for advice.
Only after the ACLU intervened was he allowed to wear the shirt, which supports gay marriages. Jerome High School policy states that a child can wear such items to express their views on social issues, And that Zach had the right to wear the tee shirt.
School officials have also agreed to stop watching Zach and the clothes he wears. They will rely on his judgment. Schools have had the power to censor everything children say, watch, read and wear. This is done to protect the students that may be offended. There has been in recent years, more violence at schools throughout the United States. Racially motivated materials, in some case, have incited violence, riots and even death in the past few years.
The School officials are aware of the difficulties with balancing student rights with the first amendment. It is their responsibility to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for education.
